Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn.jpg

Spanish artist and illustrator Lola Dupre has an on-going series of ‘exploding’ portraits of film and pop culture icons created with paper and glue.

Dupre cuts each portrait into small triangular pieces and carefully arranges them to form a collage. The shards spread out from a focal point, creating a visually arresting exploding effect.

The art of diplomacy

bertrand-russell.jpg

'These, then, are the qualities of my ideal diplomatist. Truth, accuracy, calm, patience, good temper, modesty and loyalty. They are also the qualities of an ideal diplomacy. But, the reader may object, you have forgotten intelligence, knowledge, discernment, prudence, hospitality, charm, industry, courage and even tact. I have not forgotten them. I have taken them for granted.'  Sir Harold George Nicolson, Diplomacy (1939)

Portrait of the Artist without Beard

The-Portrait-of-the-Artist-without-Beard.A-Self-Portrait.Van.Gogh.jpg

The Portrait of the Artist without Beard is a self portrait made by Vincent Van Gogh. It was created in 1889.

This is the only portrait where the artist was without beard. The picture was painted by Van Gogh during his stay in the hospital in San Remy. The artist painted a self-portrait without beard just after having been shaved. He wanted to send a picture to his mother Anna Cornelia Karbentus as a gift for her 70th birthday. Van Gogh could not personally be present at the party and so he wanted to send a picture instead, thereby convincing the mother that he was all right. The author looks younger than his years. It should be noted that during this period Van Gogh made two self-portraits. During his lifetime, the artist created thirty-six self-portraits. In each picture the author paid special attention to emotions: excitement, tranquility and meditation. He tried to find answers to his questions by means of his imagination.

Ode to Autumn

Image

You are bold as brass Autumn; a true English eccentric who won’t drop your hemline when the temperature plummets. You are an inspiration to us all! Tis the season to set forth in witty apostrophes, like my eighties roller boots and jaunty ‘mother of the bride’ fascinator. To celebrate your arrival, I will be investing in a pair of Spats wellies and a talking umbrella, like the one in Mary Poppins that tells when I’m over my overdraft limit.

I fancy you rotten, Autumn: you are as tasty as a baked potato on bonfire night! I gorge senselessly on you while watching Homeland, and fantasising about being sodomised by Damien Lewis.

To Autumn

014

How beautiful the season is now – How fine the air. A temperate sharpness about it. Really, without joking, chaste weather – Dian skies – I never lik'd stubble fields so much as now – Aye better than the chilly green of spring. Somehow a stubble plain looks warm – in the same way that some pictures look warm – this struck me so much in my Sunday's walk that I composed upon it.

John Keats  in a letter to his friend J.H. Reynolds.

===

Keats wrote "To Autumn" on September 19, 1819, at the height of his skill. He had just returned from a stroll near the town of Winchester in Hampshire, England.
